The gift of peace

ATD 12The Word

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27

Thought

One evening I arrived home from what had been a challenging day. Walking toward the house I noticed a box sitting at the door. We have lived in the country for many years and have always had deliveries made to our office in town. In fact, when a package appears at home they are usually left by mistake. This one, though, was actually addressed to us yet we had not ordered anything. I took it inside, opened it, and discovered apples from a well-known orchard sent to us by some very thoughtful friends. Strange as it may sound, their gift changed the tone of the day from one of unrest to one more peaceful.

Thoughtful gifts, words of encouragement, and affirmation from friends are always welcomed and can change attitudes and the direction of a day.

Wonderful, appreciated, and welcomed as gifts from loved ones and friends can be, the life altering potential of a gift from the unlimited resourcefulness of the creator of all life, our perfect friend, should boggle the minds of us all. His gift opens the door of resolve to one of humanity’s more complex and perplexing issues: the matter of internal restlessness. It is perplexing in that the treasures, fame, and power of the world cannot produce genuine lasting peace for the heart and mind. The quality of peace I’m referring to cannot be purchased, bartered for, or obtained by a conquering army. The sole remedy for this human condition comes from a singular source in the form of a gift from Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Cause my eyes to fix firmly on You, Your provisions and promises today Lord for they leave no room for need if I will simply trust and obey that which You have spoken. Amen.

“Morning by morning He wakens me and opens my understanding to His will.” Isaiah 50:4
