ATD 19The Word

“I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what He has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord.” Psalm 40:1-3

The news reported a woman in Los Angeles who tried to jump from the top of one roof to another some eighteen inches away but failed the attempt and fell between the two buildings. She had only minor injuries, but was wedged standing upright and stuck between the two buildings with no hope of escape on her own. All she could do was cry out for help as she remained hopelessly trapped. She was later rescued by a fireman who was lowered to her by a rope, grabbed her arms, and lifted her from what could have been a slow death. She was most grateful to be delivered from her ordeal and onlookers cheered the rescue.

Without Christ we are hopelessly trapped, separated from God because of our sin, and on our own helpless to change our situation. God in His mercy responds to our cry for help in our time of need, and through the redemptive work of His Son lifts us from our hopelessness and places us on Christ the solid rock.

With this Good News as the content of our song, we are to make known Jesus Christ as the source of our deliverance. As we genuinely live the Christ-life, it will cause others to also put their trust in the Lord.

Left to myself, Lord, I had no way of escape from the captivity of sin, but You in Your love and mercy granted me great grace. I am grateful and my heart is full to love and serve You as my deliverer. Lead me today to share with others of my one time despair and dilemma and of Your love, grace, and deliverance. Amen.

“Morning by morning He wakens me and opens my understanding to His will.” Isaiah 50:4
