Jehovah: the impenetrable fortress

ATD 28The Word

“The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to Him and are safe.” Proverbs 18:10

A Thought

At one time in history Fort Eben-Emael in Liege, Belgium was believed to be the strongest military stronghold in the world. The fort itself was awesome. Built between 1932 and 1935, it was a base for both infantry and artillery units. The defenses of the fort were placed so that each mutually covered the other should the fort come under attack. The weaponry within the fort was also awesome. Connected by miles of tunnels, it was effectively self-sufficient and contained barracks, sick bays and a communication center. The tunnel complex was built with a ventilation system complete with filters in case of a poison gas attack.

However, on May 10th 1940, the unimaginable happened. Fort Eben-Emael was attacked by the Germans as part of their blitzkrieg which means “Lightening war” based on speed, accuracy, and surprise. Eben-Emael had one major weakness. It was vulnerable to an attack from the air, and the German High command surprised the Belgium army by using 11 armed gliders carrying troops and, in addition, provided a diversion outside the fort. The attack was a success and the fort was quickly taken with minimal loss to the Germans. Not only did the fort fall, but the effects were devastating to Belgium and other European nations as well.[1]

Our spiritual foe is very cunning when using speed, surprise, and distraction against the pale defenses of humanity. We are no match for him without God. Unfortunately many live as though they are strong and wise enough to do so, only to fail in the end. The greatest of human fortresses thought impenetrable still have weakness and vulnerability. There is only one safe fortress void of vulnerability, He is Jehovah-Sabaoth (The Lord our protector).

Lord, without You my exposure and vulnerabilities to the enemy of my soul are numerous and my efforts to defend myself futile. You, though, are my refuge and fortress, an impenetrable stronghold in which I put my confidence and hope. Whatever strategy may be formed against me this day, You Lord are able to keep me safe as I trust in You. Amen.
