Music’s greatest purpose

ATD 29The Word

“Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; celebrate His lovely name with music.” Psalm 135:3

Though some, more than others, everyone seems to enjoy music. It can draw from us deep emotion and express things we are unable to articulate on our own. It can help change an attitude of dullness into one of more optimism. Martin Luther said, “I am strongly persuaded that after theology there is no art that can be placed on a level with music for besides theology music is the only art capable of affording peace and joy to the heart.”

Colossians chapter one tells us God made everything that exists. Not only did He make it, but He made it for Himself, “Everything was created through Him and for Him.” As wonderful and far reaching as music is in purpose and enjoyed by countless people over the centuries, it finds its highest value and purpose when Christians use it in worship to God.

“Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

Praise Him all creatures here below.

Praise Him above ye heavenly host.

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.” (Thomas Ken 1674)

I praise You, God, for Your goodness today, and I will sing the song of life You have placed within my heart. Amen.

“Morning by morning He wakens me and opens my understanding to His will.” Isaiah 50:4
