“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by His great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.” 1 Peter 1:3-5
My wife and I enjoyed a long walk one afternoon while staying in the small New England village of Woodstock, Vermont. We happened upon an old cemetery located beside the Ottauquechee River which runs through the village. It was a beautiful sunny day and we decided a bit deeper investigation of the cemetery would be fun. We stepped through a narrow gate within the native stone wall surrounding the cemetery and for a few moments began to read some of the stone markers.
Most of the headstones were simple and similar in shape and dated from the 1700’s. The weather elements over the years had faded many names, dates, and epitaphs, but still some remained legible. Strolling slowly and quietly I began to wonder what some of those laid to rest lives were once like. What were their occupations and the look of a typical day lived in the village and region. Then the thought entered of how many of them might have been Christian and of them we would someday have an opportunity to meet because of our common hope and faith in Christ. The inheritance for all the redeemed is in heaven where we will worship God forever and the relationship between the friends of God will, as well, last forever.
The things of earth may fade and fail but those whose faith is in Christ live with hope which will not disappoint and the promise of unfading inheritance protected by the one God eternal!
Keep my eyes, my mind, and my heart focused on You and things eternal. Those things forever in Your care to be revealed once this earth journey and adventure are completed. May Your will be my purpose. Amen.
