Overwhelming is our God

ATD 44The Word

“O Lord my God You have done many miracles for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. If I tried to recite all Your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.” Psalm 40:5

Though it is a cold day in February at the moment, I recall one early summer’s eve standing on an isolated beach in Florida and staring out into the moonlit Gulf of Mexico. After a long mesmerizing gaze, I shifted my eyes from watching the waves break on the beach and looked upward into the sky. A brief thunderstorm had occurred a little earlier and had left the sky exceptionally clear. The view was breath taking and the moment a memory maker. Even though the stars were obviously there all the time, it was as though thousands of additional ones had appeared since the night before. I chose a smaller perimeter skyward and began to count, but as I stared I began to see dozens more not seen at first glance. An attempt to count them would have been impossible for their number was overwhelming. Instead, a deep sense of awe rose within me and the gratefulness of the moment to recognize and honor God for His greatness.

The immensity of all God has done and continues to do is far too much for any of us to fully absorb. The sum and wonder of His creation cannot be humanly recorded, for they are too numerous. The Psalmist tells us God’s plans for us far exceed our ability to list, and thus fathom. Our part is to acknowledge them as He unfolds them to us, follow Him as He leads us in them, and honor His greatness. He is the God of wonder!

Lord, You have done more for me than I am aware and more than I can count. You have included me in Your magnificent plans, and I am humbled and grateful. Though I cannot number them, please lead me to tell those in my path of the greatness of Your glory. Amen.
