Wonder and awe

ATD 79The Word

“When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—what are people that you should think about them, mere mortals that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority—the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents. O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!” Psalm 8:3-9

 Thought

It was a very late evening when I pulled off the main road onto the narrow dirt and rock lane which leads to our home. The eastern sky was unusually clear, cloudless, and with the glow of a full moon. From the west however a cloud filled cold front had begun dropping multiple thousands of varied shaped and sized snowflakes into the small valley. I stopped the car, turned the engine off, and stepped outside. Except for the snowflakes all else was motionless and quiet, creating a rare, very peaceful moment. I glanced heavenward and two thoughts entered my mind.

First, the Creator of the heavens and earth, the Lord I love and serve, is absolutely, incomprehensiblyy, full of awe and wonder. I was able to see but a small portion of His handiwork at that moment from where I was standing, yet it was still more than I could take in.

Second, though me a mere mortal, a product of His divine creation, this incomprehensible God desired close relationship and made a way for me to experience it. He is One like no other, who cannot be understood or measured by mortals, yet He has created a place for us to worship Him, communicate with Him, and have Him as friend. Yes indeed, the wonder of it all. “O Lord how majestic is Your name.”

Prayer

There are times when I see but a small portion of Your handiwork yet it overwhelms me because of how really great are. I worship the You, the Lord of glorious wonder. Amen.
