“Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. Anyone who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.” John 12:25, 26
I suppose every age in history has battled the plague of selfishness; self-infatuation, self-preservation, self-centeredness, self-exaltation, and the likes. In this passage Jesus delivers truth that leads all who would hear and respond rightly to an uncontested and certain hope. With a heart of compassion, love, and deep longing for His hearers to understand the impact of His message, He reveals the pathway to genuine freedom. He divulges the vanity and eventual destruction to ourselves should we make self-seeking our goal and purpose. To wrongly follow the deceiver’s lie that life is about us, our happiness, and our success. He unveils the subsequent demise of chasing fame and fortune for oneself for in the end it leads to emptiness,, purposelessness, and hopelessness. Few things are as sad as looking into the lifeless eyes of someone that has made it their goal to accumulate the world’s accolades, idols, and wealth for self-identity and comfort.
In contrast Jesus then says for all who would lay aside self-agendas, goals, and plans and take up the causes of His Kingdom, would in the end be honored by the greatest force in existence for all eternity. Honored by our perfect Creator, Father in heaven, and the only true and living God.
My God, my Lord, and my King, please make my life and each of my days upon this earth dedicated solely for Your glory. Amen.
