”Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting His hands to heaven, He blessed them. While He was blessing them, He left them and was taken up to heaven. So they worshiped Him and then returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. And they spent all of their time in the Temple, praising God.” Luke 24:50-53
How awe struck they must have been to see Jesus ascend to heaven before their very eyes. They had observed Him as He talked by the sea and on hillsides. They watched as He touched blind eyes and suddenly those eyes could see. They walked along roads with Him, listened to His wisdom, stories of the Kingdom of God, and His instruction to them to continue His mission of declaring the Good News of the Kingdom.
They experienced the agony and emotional tearing of their own hearts as He entered Jerusalem for the final time and the events that led to His death. They experienced the wonder of His reappearance from the tomb as He defied death and enjoyed His presence in the following days.
Now He was disappearing from their sight and they stood gazing. Straining at any possibility to still catch the tiniest speck of His form against the expanse of the sky, but finally He was gone.
They left their location, their hearts overflowing with great joy and expectancy, and they worshiped the risen King, praising God.
I pray for my heart to be filled with the awe, wonder, and expectancy like those who beheld You as you ascended. I worship You this morning for You are one that has shown me mercy and given me hope and a future of eternity with You through Your Grace. I worship You for I will see You someday in all Your glory along will all those who have surrendered to Your magnificent gift. May I display Your genuine abiding joy to all this day, for You are my God, my Savior, my Lord. Amen.
