“Jesus replied, ‘The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31
There is much to be gleaned from the words of Jesus contained in the four gospels. They reveal His ministry and plans for His Kingdom. I think a summation of His heart and mandates are contained in the passage above and in Matthew 28:18-20.
Jesus conveyed to all humanity that God has as His principal goal for us to love Him with unconstrained devotion and with the whole of our being. There is no overriding commandment and obeying it produces the optimum for life. Simply stated, loving God is the ultimate human experience and all others fail to even register measurement in comparison.
The second command is to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus leads us to be focused and devoted to others above self.
I love You, Lord, it is true, and yet I want to love You more. You said if I loved You then I should obey Your commands and what You have commanded is that I love others as You do and display that love. Help me, Lord Jesus, to be like You. Amen.
