“Anyone trusting in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage.” Proverbs 11:28
One winter seemed to have unusually cold temperatures for our region and definitely more frequent snow. The number of friends and neighbors wishing for spring to arrive were numerous and increasing. My wife and I were looking forward to the budding of trees and shrubs which would signal the transition from the cold of winter to early spring. The time when the primary colors of gray and brown in the surrounding field and woods transition to shades of green. When this occurs it seems like it happens overnight. It doesn’t, of course, but one day we will notice tiny pale green leaves unfolding from buds and then quickly the entire hillside of trees change from brown to green and the area flourishes with fresh life.
This Proverb reveals the vanity and foolishness of trusting in the world’s wealth, but then brightens up with much encouragement for those in relationship with God. Those belonging to him who are committed to obeying and living according to his word will flourish like the sudden abundance of healthy, fresh growing spring leaves. While I do not know precisely what the writer was referring to when he used this phrase, I do know this: God, who always knows what is best for us and always does what is best for us, can be trusted as we anticipate by his definition of what it means to flourish like the leaves of spring.
Lord of my life I desire Your will and the wisdom and faith to trust you for all that I need. Guard my heart and don’t let me be persuaded by the glitter of temporal and valueless treasures of this world, but may I seek and serve you with my whole heart, for you are the true treasure. Amen.
