“Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.” John 14:23
Zacchaeus had been watching Jesus from a Sycamore tree when Jesus spoke to him, “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” What excitement and joy Zacchaeus must have had! He not only got to see the now famous person being talked about in the region, but now he was going to host him in his home.
Jesus promises to any who will love and obey Him that He will take up residence within them. The heart is Christ’s subject, of course, but what if He were physically to abide in my home? How would that change my life? There would, of course, be excitement, spiritual due diligence, and probably much more intensity in spiritual thought and Christian lifestyle.
He, of course, does abide internally within the believer’s heart. He is there for constant access, available for consultation and leadership in right decisions concerning any matter.
He abides with us so we are guided into His holiness and righteousness. We can view life through His lenses. Standards are elevated, not from law and legalism, but from love, honor, and respect of His presence. Most valuable is that this perfect one has as his goal genuine friendship and relationship available to be experienced at depths we can’t imagine. Nothing from the world can compare or bring completeness to our lives like Christ when He takes up residence within our souls.
Thank you for taking up residence within my heart, Lord Jesus. I pray I will honor you in all the activity of this day as we walk through it together. Amen
