“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever.” Psalm 136:1
We are instructed to honor and worship God with a heart of thanksgiving. Psalm 136 begins a long list of God’s accomplishments and blessing beginning with his goodness. The Hebrew word tob means, “good; favorable; festive; pleasing; pleasant; well; better; right; best, and appears in all periods of biblical Hebrew about 559 times.” Emphatic, absolute, and endless is God’s goodness. I once heard someone say, “He is never not good!” While it may not be grammatically correct, it contains unequivocal truth.
Twenty six times this song says God’s faithful love endures forever. “The word that is used for ‘love’ in this refrain is the powerful Hebrew term hesed, which means ‘covenant love’ or the favor God shows to those with whom He has entered into a covenant relationship. Sometimes it is translated ‘steadfast (or enduring) love.’ It is enduring because God is a God of His word. He is forever good, and He does not break His covenant.”
Lord I thank you this morning for your goodness and thank you for your love which is eternal. Amen.
