The protected inheritance

ATD 212The Word

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by His great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.” 1 Peter 1:3-5

Thought

On a long walk one afternoon while in Vermont, my wife and I happened upon an old cemetery located beside a small river. It was a beautiful sunny day and we decided a side journey was in order. We stepped through a narrow gate behind the native stone walls surrounding the cemetery and for a few moments read some of the head stones.

Most of them were simple and similar in shape, perhaps indicative of the region and era of their placement. There were several people born in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Decades, even centuries of weather had faded the names, dates, and epitaphs carved within the stones, many beyond recognition. I began to think of all those laid to rest in this parcel of ground within the small village. What took place during their lives? What was daily life like, their work and play? What were the sources of their challenges and joys? What occupied their minds, their hopes and dreams?

Believers in Christ have great hope! Ours is to be a life given to his call and will, and thus our time on earth filled with great expectation for our inheritance is of eternal value. Unlike the things of earth, those in heaven will not change or fade, for they are guarded by the power of God.

Prayer

Keep my eyes, my mind, and my heart focused on those things important to you. Those things committed to you, under your care, and your watchful eye. My future lies within the promise of abiding with you forever once this earth journey and adventure are completed. Your will and glory, my Lord and my God. Amen.
