“I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety…” Psalm 61:2
I have a friend who lives in the Texas Hill Country. The region is beautiful, yet dangerous when sudden heavy rains cause rapidly rising water to rush through its many canyons. The local residents know well the flash flooding dangers and avoid crossing low lying roads during these times.
One night my friend miscalculated the water’s depth in a flooding situation and found himself caught in perilous rushing water. He was able to escape from his car, but was then violently tossed down stream by the force of the flood waters. Desperate and praying during the event, the current suddenly pushed him into the side of a huge boulder. Amazingly he was able to climb atop the rock and remained there safely until the water receded enough to escape. When he later shared the story he remarked of how grateful he was to find refuge on the giant boulder.
The Lord is referred to in Scripture as our rock of refuge and source to lead us to safety when we are overwhelmed by the relentless onslaught of the evil one. God is the perfect and powerful leader, the shepherd who guides us to the safe places in Christ.
Father, lead me to the place of refuge in you and let me abide in your peace. Amen.
