Father forgive them

Christ carrying cross up Calvary on Good Friday over dark and stormy sky

The Word

“Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.’” Luke 23:34

Thought

Jesus knew he was innocent of every accusation and charge against him. He knew lies, deception, and manipulation were used to place him upon the beams, where as a man his flesh would perish of life. He knew the thoughts of those watching as he experienced injustice, mocking, and ridicule. He knew there were those gathered in the area of his crucifixion who were overcome with sorrow, grief, and disbelief of what appeared the finale of their hero, their conqueror, and deliverer.

He was also aware of others filled with bitterness and jealousy, thinking they would soon be rid of this one stirring up controversy, trouble, and causing people to question their lofty positions and worldly authority.

Jesus also knew a legion of angels could be summed for his immediate rescue should he beckon, as his Father and the heavenly host looked down upon this scene of cruelty and disgust.

Yet, he knew all too well the only possible hope for humanity’s release from the captivity of hell was dependent upon his choice to accomplish his mission. To become the Savior of the world, he must give his life as the ransom for mankind.

In the midst of this vile injustice, he also knew he must pray a most powerful prayer for his accusers, captors, and killers, “Father, forgive them”.

Prayer

Thank you for your mercy Lord Jesus, and your redeeming gift of grace which brings incomprehensible life of abundance. Thank you for your forgiveness. Amen.
