The matter of trust

“The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?” Proverbs 20:24

Thought

During our lives, we will be confronted by the phrase, “If you will…” While its appearance is often innocent, there are additional instances when it contains stalling and decaying power as it pertains to the will of God. The Pharisees and scribes used it to challenge Jesus in his ministry as they asked, “If you will show us a sign…”, “If you will do a miracle…”, “If you will answer this question…” This brief phrase still lies in waiting to dampen and discourage the willing and spiritually adventurous heart. The question may appear reasonable, but may have hidden motives, “If you will meet our standards…”, “If you will do it our way…” ,”If you will do it, as we have done it…”

Sometimes delays are stumbling blocks of our own doing. For example, “I will follow you God, if you will first permit me to take care of personal business.”, “I will follow you, if you will first supply the resources?” or “I will follow, if you will allow me to live a certain standard.”

I am not encouraging spiritual shortcuts, or usurping needed and proper channels of authority. Too often though the phrase, “If you will…” originates from a lack of proper understanding of God’s perspective and intention. It may originate from the fear of relinquishing control, change, discomfort, or because the adventure is outside the borders of natural reason.

What if Abraham, when asked by God to leave the land of his fathers, had said, “If you will supply all my needs before I leave, I will go?” What if David, upon hearing he would be king of Israel had said, “If you will promise there will be no challenges from Saul, I will?”

Following the steps of the Lord, experiencing the rightness of the will of God, is a matter of trust in him, if you will.

Prayer

Lord, I pray my trust will be in you today as you lead, even in the things I do not see and understand. Amen.
