Freedom to Run

“But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God.” Romans 6:22

Thought

One morning, while walking outside, I noticed a very young raccoon stuck helplessly in a cage type trap. These critters are sometimes pretty pesky and destructive, so when the population expands around our home, I sometimes relocate them to more remote wooded areas. This little guy though, looked up through the wire cage at me with pitiful dark eyes and a sad whimpering sound. “Okay”, I thought, “You’re pardoned.” and I opened the cage door. Once outside the cage, he glanced back, and then ran as fast as he could into the woods, up the hill, and out of my sight.

Freedom from captivity of any circumstance generates varying responses, none of which is the desire to re-enter captivity, particularly when the images are associated with the term slavery.

When associated with God though, the good Father, the source of love, mercy, kindness, and grace, additional thought is strongly suggested. With him, and as his possession, one abides in boundless liberty. Paradoxically puzzling to humanistic reasoning perhaps, but in the realm of God’s Kingdom of worldly opposites, to the slave of God, also called the children of God; this is an open invitation to run freely.

Prayer

Freedom! You have delivered me from the dungeon of sin, purchased me, as the result of the deeds of Christ. You have caused my heart to breathe the life from your realms, and I am forever bound to you in your love and causes. Amen.
