“Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord; it is fitting for the pure to praise him. Praise the Lord with melodies on the lyre; make music for him on the ten-stringed harp. Sing a new song of praise to him; play skillfully on the harp, and sing with joy. For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does. He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.” Psalm 33:1-5
We love music! It can change the mood of one individual or an arena of thousands. Music encompasses numerous styles presented in a myriad of forms, but its zenith experience is in worship to God. God created music and humanity with the intent of both finding purpose and life in worship to him. When creation functions within his intended divine design the ultimate result occurs. When God is glorified with music, we in turn experience the mystery of internal fulfillment within rhythm, lyric, and melody.
Martin Luther wrote: “Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.”
For those who have discovered genuine life in relationship with Christ, the first verses of Psalm 33 call with joyful anticipation, to exalt him with multiple instruments in a new song of praise. We praise him because he is alone worthy of worship, because his truth is flawless forever. His decisions are perfect, trustworthy, fair, and just. His love is absent of prejudice, darkness, selfishness, and never fails.
He is the singular source offering resolve to the complexity of the human soul. Let the redeemed sing joyfully, sing confidently, sing often!
Be exalted, O God, with the melody of hearts set free to worship you. Source of hope, joy, and Lord of all life, you are our song! Amen.
“Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.”
