Peace

The Word

All those who listen to me live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm. (Proverbs 1:33)

Thought

The goal of Proverbs is revealed in the first few verses, “Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair.”[1] Proverbs 1:33 then unveils the promise in heeding and following the book’s wisdom and guidance, which is to “live in peace.”

Jesus said his peace was not like the anemic temporal versions from worldly sources. His peace is supported by the promises of the Kingdom of his Father.

While we do have peace from God, it does not eliminate harm in this earth life. The greater value and strength from God is the effects of the fear of harm are eliminated. What else but the divine peace of God could cause Paul to write, “O death where is your victory? O death where is your sting?” (1 Cor. 15:55) God’s peace is beyond our ability to comprehend, yet we are invited to abide in him and live within it.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, without you all resemblance of peace is a mere shadow, but in you I can rest knowing you will always provide the level of peace equal to the task and call that you lead me into. Amen.

“And don’t let us yield to temptation”
