Anyone trusting in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage. (Proverbs 11:28)
One winter seemed to have unusually cold temperatures for our region and definitely more frequent snow. The number of friends and neighbors wishing for spring to arrive were numerous and increasing. My wife and I were looking forward to the budding of trees and shrubs which would signal the transition from the cold of winter to early spring. The time when the primary colors of gray and brown in the surrounding field and woods transition to shades of green. When this occurs it seems to happen overnight. It doesn’t, of course, but one day we will notice tiny pale green leaves unfolding from buds and then quickly the entire hillside of trees changes from brown to green and the area flourishes with fresh life.
This Proverb reveals the vanity and foolishness of trusting in the world’s wealth. However, those belonging to God and in relationship with him, will flourish like the sudden abundance of new healthy spring leaves.
God, who always knows what is best for us and always does what is best for us. He can be trusted as we anticipate by his definition to flourish like the leaves of spring.
Lord of my life I desire your will and the wisdom and faith to trust you for all that I need. Guard my heart and don’t let me be persuaded by the glitter of temporal and valueless treasures of this world, but may I seek and serve you with my whole heart, for you are the true treasure. Amen.
