You light a lamp to see

The Word

You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness. (Psalm 18:28)

One night a storm in our area caused a power outage and an already dark night became darker with no source of light. I got out of bed, made my way through the house, and wondered if I’d left shoes or my backpack out in the floor to potentially trip over. Then came another lightning flash with just enough light to reveal the contents of the room and put my concerns at ease. I could walk forward with no obstacles in my path. I made my way to the back door and looked outside into the night. I could hear the wind and rain, but could see nothing. Then a another flash of lightning temporary permitted me to see the area behind the house before the darkness returned.

There are many obstacles before us in this world. Attempting to move forward in our own strength, solely in our own wisdom will cause us to fumble in the dark. God is our source of light, and he is not just a momentary flash, but a consistent provision to illuminate the darkness and cause us to steer away from danger.

In a world of darkness, Lord, you provide light. You reveal things as they are so we might see those things in our path which cause us to stumble. You reveal them and ensure safe passage around them or you allow us to wait until you remove them. When you light up the darkness, it is no longer a threat to me. I seek and embrace your light, for you are the light of the world. Amen.

“And don’t let us yield to temptation”
