For you have rescued me from death; you have kept my feet from slipping. So now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light. (Psalm 56:13)
Lurking in the darkness are things unknown, things unseen. The enemy of our soul designs and positions them strategically for our harm. Satan waits to see if we will blindly stumble into his trap hoping to wound and, if possible, destroy us.
Death seemed imminent to the psalmist, but this passage reveals God intervention. He prevented him from slipping to his destruction.
God’s motive for the rescue was clear, so the psalmist might walk in his presence, in his life-giving light. This has been God’s purpose from the beginning for all mankind, to have his people in his presence, and this is the motive for all those God rescues. God’s light leads to life, and God’s light gives life.
Lord I am grateful and humbled for your divine intervention to rescue me from the evil one, from death. Amen.
“but rescue us from the evil one.”
