You led our ancestors by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night so that they could find their way. (Nehemiah 9:12)
Here Nehemiah reflects on God’s past faithfulness to clearly guide his people by pillars of cloud and fire. Nehemiah then transitions and appeals for God’s intervention as the nation of Israel is in another plight. For forty years the Lord guided them by a pillar of cloud during the light of day and a pillar of fire in night. Why? Because he did not want them to be the least bit confused as to his will and the direction he wanted them to go.
He still leads with clarity, though maybe not with pillars of cloud and fire. He has given us the unmistakable guidance and enablement of his Holy Spirit. The more time we spend seeking to learn and identify his characteristics and ways, the greater the clarity and recognition of his leading grows.
A key indicator of his guidance is he leads us to those places fulfilling his will. His will is to love him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. His will is to take the Good News of his grace into the fields of harvest. His will is to be selfless, help others, and encourage others. His will values the things eternal and not the earthly temporal.
You are able to lead me Lord in any way you choose. Amen.
“but rescue us from the evil one.”
