Rescued

The Word

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord. (Psalm 40:1-3)

Thought

The news reported a Los Angeles woman who tried to jump from the top of one roof to another eighteen inches away, but fell between the two buildings. She had only minor injuries, but was wedged upright between the two buildings with no hope of escape on her own. All she could do was cry out for help as she remained hopelessly trapped. She was later rescued by a fireman who was lowered to her by rope, grabbed her arms, and lifted her from what could have been a slow death. She expressed gratefulness to be delivered as onlookers cheered the rescue.

Without Christ we are hopelessly trapped in our sin, and helpless to change our situation. God heard our cry for help, and through Christ lifted us from our hopelessness.

With this Good News as the content of our song, we are to make known Jesus Christ as the source of our deliverance. As we live the Christ-life, others will also place their trust in the Lord.

Prayer

Left to myself, Lord, I had no way of escape from the captivity of sin, but you in your love and mercy granted me grace. Lead me today to share with others, my one time despair, and your rescue. Amen.

“and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.”
