Living expectantly

The Word

You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. (Psalm 4:7, 8)

Thought

The writer reveals a threefold outcome from his trust in the Lord:

  • Joy greater than the abundance of material things.
  • Safety or security from whatever would endanger him, and
  • Peace, the most sought after treasure of heart and soul.

Worldly mechanisms and recipes to bring peace are to no avail. God alone, with his unlimited wisdom, power, and resource, is capable of delivering genuine peace to heart and soul. God alone is capable of fending off the wiles of the evil one. God alone is worthy of our complete trust.

David’s experience of trusting the Lord can also be our experience, if we will place ourselves before and within the care of Almighty God.

Prayer

When I think of you and all you have done for me Lord, my heart fills with joy, for whom have I in heaven but you? Who but you, Lord Jesus, can bring peace, the result of your perfect and eternal provision. When I genuinely rest, it is because of my trust in you. I choose today to trust in you alone to deliver me from the evil one. Amen.

“but rescue us from the evil one.”
