The freedom of grace

The Word

When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. David also spoke of this when he described the happiness of those who are declared righteous without working for it: ‘Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of sin.’ (Romans 4:4-7)

No power of man could have ever provided release from death’s lethal grip. There existed no armada on the seas, no massive army, nor weaponry sufficient enough to deliver us from the clutches of the evil one. Human wisdom and ingenuity failed to deliver humanity from the plight of sin. Only the hand of God, only the redemption of Christ, provided escape from sin’s dark dungeons.

True freedom is unearned and undeserved. True freedom came as the result of love and mercy. Freedom came in the form of a man, from the Father of lights. Freedom came in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Freedom and forgiveness came from the Divine to as many as would receive the freedom through faith in the power of the Son of God and his most marvelous grace.

You and you alone, Lord Jesus Christ, have given me freedom. Motivated by your love, accomplished by your sacrifice, and covered by your grace, I am no longer condemned to death, but live in the hope of your glory. Amen.

“and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.”
