You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins. Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace. (Luke 1:77-79)
These are the final words in Zechariah’s prophecy concerning John the Baptist’s privileged mission to pave the way for the ministry of Jesus. “Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light of heaven is about to break.” What a beautiful image of the Word becoming flesh. Jesus, the Good News of the Kingdom of Heaven, was about to embark on his earthly mission to bring light mankind. Darkness would no longer be the conqueror, but conquered through the unbeatable power of the cross of Christ.
What an honor for John to be chosen to declare heaven’s light was about to penetrate the darkness, and lead all who were willing, to the path of peace.
The intensity of that light has led (and still leads) all who say “Yes!” to the truth of Christ. Each who has found salvation through Christ has the same honor and responsibility as John, to “tell…people how to find salvation.”
Thank you Father, for sending your Son as the light to the world. Thank you for delivering me from the darkness to the path of peace. May I be found until my last breath telling the story of Jesus Christ, the giver of life. Amen.
“And don’t let us yield to temptation”
