For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:10)
I was slowly making my way from our house up the narrow lane toward the paved country highway. About halfway I caught a glimpse in front of me of some small animal in the middle of the dirt road. I stopped the car and realized it was a small bird called a Painted Bunting that lives in the area during spring and summer months. He was motionless at first, but then darted into one of the many cedar trees lining the old barbed wire fence beside the lane. He perched a moment on a limb close by. The little fellow’s brightly colored blue, red, yellow, and green feathers were breathtaking, really. My first thought was what a masterpiece God had made in creating this small, graceful bird and how grateful I was for the moment to pause and appreciate it.
I have been infatuated with the animal kingdom for as long as I can remember, and as wonderful as it is, it is nothing compared to humanity, God’s highest created living order and greatest masterpiece.
Through the redemptive work of Christ and our obedience to him, we step into a realm of things he has planned: good things from his mind and creative ability and wonderful things that bring glory and honor to him as we walk where he leads us. Our God and Father of life does make beautiful things.
God, you have created me for good purposes and redeemed me through your Son, the Savior for all mankind, Jesus Christ. We are the result of your divine craftsmanship and exist for your great pleasure. Let this day and all you have planned for me to do according to your will be fulfilled. Amen.
“Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.”
